File and Folder Naming

The following instructions should produce a good readable file name:

  1. Make it all lowercase
  2. Replace spaces with hyphens
  3. Use a limited set of characters, for example a to z, 0 to 9 and hyphens ("é" replace with "e", "&" replace with "and" etc.)
  4. Remove non-essential words like 'and', 'or', 'the', 'with' etc. to be left with just the essential keywords
  5. Remove repeated words, with respect to the final URL

For example if "Our Research News & Events" was a new file to be added under "www.tcd.ie/area/research/" the result of each instruction from above would be as follows:

  1. our-research news & events.php (all lowercase)
  2. our-research-news-&-events.php (spaces replaced with hyphens)
  3. our-research-news-and-events.php (limit the set of characters being used)
  4. research-news-events.php (remove non-essential words)
  5. news-events.php (remove repeated words, with respect to the final URL)
  6. The final URL becomes www.tcd.ie/area/research/news-events.php
