Trinity College Dublin

VOLUNTARY TUITION PROGRAM

Program Information

Anyone at Trinity - Students, Staff and Graduates are welcome, and encouraged, to participate in the program, and join us in tutoring, running educational clubs and visiting local schools. The programs currently run by voluntary tuition are as follows;

The Main Program

The singlest largest program which is run by the VTP deals with one to one tuition of both Junior Cert and Leaving Certificate students. Tuition lasts for one hour in three different centres throughout the week. Tutors generally help their kid's with their homework, as well as explaining more complicated concepts, and helping the child in any way they can. The pupils participating in our programs attend inner-city schools, many of which are in close proximity to Trinity. Both Primary and Secondary pupils take part. Most volunteers working on our programmes are needed to meet the huge demand for one-to-one tuition. However, we have a number of smaller programmes which build on our links with local children and teenagers also.

Tuition takes place in Goldsmith Hall, Ringsend Technical Institute and St. Andrews Resource Centre, monday through thursday, in one hour slots from 6pm till 8pm.

Special Needs Program

The Special Needs program was founded in conjunction with local special needs schools and the parents on the children. The program also involves one to one tuition, but with children drawn from local special needs schools. These children have their own unique needs and difficulties, ranging from mild to sever special educative needs to behavioral difficulties. Tutoring takes place in a carefully controlled environment for one hour. Tutors assist the children with their school work, as well as playing board games, to assist both their educational and social skills.

Tuition takes place in one hour slots, in Goldsmith Hall and St. Andrews on mondays between 6pm till 8 pm, St. St. Andrews Resource Centre currently takes place in Goldsmith Hall, Ringsend Technical Institute and St. Andrews Resource Centre, monday through thursday, in one hour slots from 6pm till 8pm.

Unaccompanied Minors/Refugee

This new program enables us to assist the youth of Ireland's refugee population. Students in the program are all minors (under 18), who are unnaccompanied in the country, but who are participating in schooling. Our tutors assist them in integrating into their school, improving their language and study skills, and allowing them to experience a more normal side of Irish culture. Tuition takes place in Goldsmith hall on monday nights.

Parallel

The Parallel Programme is designed to target children who for various reasons are at high risk of dropping out of the educational system after their Junior Certificate. It's aim is to encourage these children to continue on to complete a Leaving Certificate and attend third level education. It has been in operation for a number of years, with the primary support of the Trinity Access Programme. The program has grown and this year included two local schools: Marian College and CBS Westland Row. This is achieved through our usual one-to-one tuition each week, however this is followed by a second hour of extra activities, ranging from group discussions, to lunches at TCD, to presentations by guest speakers amongst other extra-curricular activities. This has served to create an strong bond between the group and to encourage attendence further. The Parallel program takes place in Goldsmith Hall on thursdays this year.

Tuition currently takes place in Goldsmith Hall, Ringsend Technical Institute and St. Andrews Resource Centre, monday through thursday, in one hour slots from 6pm till 8pm.

PARC

PARC is our newest centre: it's located five minutes from Trinity at Pearse House, and we offer primary school tuition here for two hours a week on a thursday. Because of this earlier time, we are able to cater for younger children (aged five upwards) at PARC. The daytime commitment can be difficult for undergraduates due to timetable changes: we would therefore especially encourage postgraduates, staff and evening students to apply to tutor here.

Tuition currently takes place in Goldsmith Hall, Ringsend Technical Institute and St. Andrews Resource Centre, monday through thursday, in one hour slots from 6pm till 8pm.
