Awards & Award Ceremonies - Application for Conferral of Degree

All candidates for conferral of degree must make application by completing a Notice of Candidature form, and submitting it to the Student and Graduate Records Office by the specified closing date set out in the schedule below.

Conditional application may be made in advance of the publication of final degree results, but must be confirmed fourteen days prior to the beginning of the relevant commencement session.

Students with results under appeal are advised not to proceed to Commencements until the appeal is concluded.

Candidates for Primary Degree

The Notice of Candidature pack in respect of conferral of primary degrees is available for download here.

All registered undergraduate students expecting to be conferred with a primary degree in the current academic year, are annually invited by email, to make application to the Student and Graduate Records Office. The invitation includes provision of all the information necessary to make application.

Candidates for Higher Degree (excluding degree of M.A.)

The Notice of Candidature pack in respect of conferral of higher degrees is available for download here.

All registered postgraduate students expecting to be conferred with a higher degree in the current academic year, are annually invited by email, to make application to the Student and Graduate Records Office. The invitation includes provision of all the information necessary to make application.

Candidates for the degree of Master in Arts (M.A.)

Bachelors of the University of at least three years’ standing may proceed to the degree of Master in Arts. The degree may be conferred at any Commencements Session. In 2013/14, the fee for conferral of the M.A. degree is €637 and should be paid to the Student and Graduate Records Office. The fee is waived in the case of graduates of fifty or more years’ standing (ie, alumni who first graduated fifty or more years ago).

The Notice of Candidature form in respect of the M.A. degree is obtainable directly from the Student and Graduate Records Office.

Closing dates for application

Candidates are advised that closing dates are very strictly adhered to, and late applicants will not be admitted to the selected ceremony; however, they may be admitted to the next available commencement session.

The closing date for application to a ceremony within a commencement session in the academic year 2013/14 is as follows:

  • Autumn: September 20, 2013
  • Winter: October 11, 2013
  • Spring: March 7, 2014

Commencements Fee

From the 2012-13 academic year the Commencements fee will be charged as a once-off payment to be levied at the same time as the tuition fee. The Commencements fee will be fully refundable to all students who become ineligible to proceed with conferral.

If you have not completed payment at Registration 2012/2013 the follow procedures below will apply:

A Commencements fee is applicable to all making application for conferral. Fees for commencements are as follows:

  • Primary and Higher Degrees: €114
  • Degree of M.A.: €637

Payment of the Commencement Fee must be made at the time of application. The fee can be paid to the Student and Graduate Records Office by credit / debit card. Payments made by credit card require the card holder to provide (in addition to their credit card number, and expiry date) the credit verification value (CVV) which is a three-digit code typically imprinted at the end of signature panel on the reverse of the card.

Payment can also be made by cheque / postal or money order / banker’s draft drawn in favour of ‘TCD No. 1 a/c’. Cash payments cannot be accepted.

Candidates will not be permitted to proceed with conferral until all amounts due by them to the College have been paid in full (including outstanding library books, and/or debts in respect of Library, accommodation, and fees) no later than two weeks prior to the beginning of a commencement session.
