Core and Elective Curriculum

In May 2008 Council and Board approved the introduction, in principle, of a revised undergraduate course structure comprising a core curriculum and an elective curriculum.

The core curriculum will normally comprise a maximum of 220 ECTS credits over a four-year programme, including mandatory and optional modules within a student’s programme of study.

The elective curriculum will normally comprise a minimum of 20 ECTS credits over a four-year programme. Of this, at least 10 credits will comprise personal or professional skills development, and these may include, for example, placements, dissertation, and research skills. The elective curriculum will also provide the opportunity for students to take a minimum of 10 credits outside their main programme of study.

Pending the commissioning of appropriate systems supports (see E-strategy) an assessment is being undertaken of the changes required to course and examination regulations, and administrative arrangements in relation to existing programmes.

Subject to timetabling constraints and module availability, all undergraduate degree programmes introduced from 2008/2009 should incorporate the provisions of the core and elective curriculum.
