Films of the Diasporic Irish
More than 2,000 fiction films have been made about the Irish in the countries to which they migrated: England, Canada, Australia, but most especially, the United States of America. While a small number of these films have been concerned with why and how the Irish left poverty-stricken Ireland, or explored the small number who returned to Ireland (notably in John Ford’s germinal The Quiet Man, 1952), most such representations are concerned with the Irish in their new lands.
