Constructions of Europe

The following represents a selection of projects currently underway within the 'Constructions of Europe' research theme at Trinity College Dublin.

Centre for War Studies

War Studies

This Centre, established in 2007, brings together significant strengths in the study of war across the time periods and disciplines.  Although the Centre’s focus is not strictly limited to any particular conflict or approach, its three primary areas of focus are: the First World War; war in twentieth century Irish history; and warfare in Ireland, Britain and Continental Europe in the seventeenth century.  Major projects supported and/or hosted by the Centre include: “Paramilitary violence after the Great War, 1918-1923,” and “International history of concentration camps before 1939” - both funded by the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences.

Professor John Horne and Professor Alan Kramer, School of Histories and Humanities

The Centre has received funding from the Long Room Hub Murphy Innovation Scheme.

Greek Papyri Project

Book of the Dead

One of the ‘treasures’ of Trinity College Library is its collection of ancient papyri from Egypt. Papyri provide a vibrant and uniquely important source material for writing social, economic, cultural and religious history. Greek papyri are difficult to read, and inaccessible not just to the general public, but even to scholars. It is the objective of this project, sponsored by the Centre for Mediterranean and Near Eastern Studies, to publish Trinity’s papyri online through the Advanced Papyrological Information System, a collections-based repository developed in the United States and hosting important holdings from both Europe and North America'

Professor Brian McGing, School of Histories and Humanities

This project has received funding from the Long Room Hub Research Initiative Scheme, which in turn is funded by the Higher Education Authority under PRTLI IV.

The Weingreen Museum

The Weingreen Museum of Biblical Antiquities holds over 2,000 objects, which encompass the entire Mediterranean world from North Africa to Mesopotamia and from the oldest city, Jericho (ninth millennium BCE), to the Crusades of the thirteenth century CE. The collection is comprised of objects and mini-collections that have been given as gifts or are on permanent loan to TCD, as well as those purchased by Prof. Jacob Weingreen or by College. This unique and mainly unknown collection will be made accessible by developing a searchable online catalogue which will enable further research on, and publication of, the Museum’s holdings.

Dr Zuleika Rodgers, School of Religions, Theology and Ecumenics

This project has received funding from the Long Room Hub Research Initiative Scheme, which in turn is funded by the Higher Education Authority under PRTLI IV.
