TIDI Development Research Week: Monday 8th – Friday 12th November
The Trinity International Development Initiative presents a showcase of development research and associated activities. During Development Research Week, TIDI will host sessions in collaboration with researchers and students from TCD and other education institutes, as well as NGOs, to highlight development research and its application across a range of topics.
Monday 8th – Friday 12th November:
PhD Module – Adapting Research Methodologies for Developing Country Conditions
TIDI’s annual multidisciplinary module for early-stage doctoral students is a series of workshops and seminars which aims to raise awareness about development issues and to provide training in the methodological challenges of conducting research in developing country environments. Information on the Master’s in Development Practice
The joint TCD-UCD Master’s degree in Development Practice (MDP) is a new two-year programme that offers a world class training and education in development practice at graduate level. The Masters in Development Practice (MDP) is funded by the MacArthur Foundation (U.S.A.) and is part of a global network of Master’s degrees in Development Practice, headquartered at Columbia University in the United States. The MDP is delivered jointly by TCD and UCD in collaboration with the National University of Rwanda, Realizing Rights, Trócaire, Kimmage Development Studies Centre and Earthmind. Students are jointly registered at TCD and UCD. The National University of Rwanda is a key partner and students will spend a portion of time completing cross-disciplinary fieldwork in Rwanda as well as in Geneva and Liberia. Suas Educational Development and TIDI present Research for Change! How research is being used to address global development challenges
Why are girl children less likely to go to school worldwide? How can solar power be used to make water safe to drink? How can a simple cooking stove help recharge a mobile phone? Find out how researchers working together across social, natural and health sciences are helping to answer these and other important questions, and how you can get involved.

Research Capacity Building for Development: Resources for Higher Education Institutes
The Irish African Partnership for Research Capacity Building (IAP) has recently produced a resource book to support Irish and African higher education partners in their work towards building individual and institutional research capacity. This presentation will discuss insights from the IAP project into research management, research finance, ICT systems and additional means and methods of supporting research that contributes to the alleviation of poverty.
Tea, coffee and sandwiches will be provided at 12.45.

TIDI Open Meeting
An update on activities in the area of International Development at TCD and opportunities to get involved. David Lloyd, Dean of Research, TCD will address the meeting which will be hosted by TIDI Chair, Jane Grimson, Professor of Health Informatics, School of Computer Science and Statistics. This meeting is primarily for TCD staff and students, however all are welcome.

Can Research Change the World? The importance of research in addressing global development challenges
A panel discussion on the role of research for development with speakers including Tom Arnold, CEO, Concern Worldwide, David Lloyd, Dean of Research, TCD, David Taylor, Professor of Geography, School of Natural Sciences, TCD and a speaker from Irish Aid. Speakers will discuss the real and potential impact of research in addressing global development challenges, drawing on their own work and experiences.

Friday 12th November:
Launch of the Trócaire Development Review 2010: Strengthening Food Security
Presented by Trócaire and TIDI. Each year Trócaire produces the Trócaire Development Review, the only annual Irish peer-reviewed journal dedicated to policy analysis and research papers on development issues. This year’s Review is on the theme of Strengthening Food Security. The Launch will be chaired by Mairead McGuinness MEP, with opening remarks by Kevin Farrell, the Irish Government Special Envoy on Hunger. This will be followed by presentations from various Review contributors on topics such as the right to food, the role of the WTO and the use of conservation agriculture techniques.

TCD Annual Volunteer Fair
Representatives and volunteers from some thirty community organisations will be available to discuss their volunteering opportunities for students, staff and alumni of Trinity College. Opportunities will range from befriending older people, to working with children with disabilities to refurbishing IT equipment and summer and gap year opportunities abroad in Africa, Asia, South America and throughout Europe. This year the fair is set to be bigger than ever and all are welcome. This event is a collaboration between the Civic Engagement Office and Trinity Volunteer Opportunities Forum
