Now in its third year, the Development Studies Association of Ireland (DSA Ireland), will hold its annual two-day postgraduate research workshop on 13-14 June 2013. Hosted by the UCD School of Social Justice, this workshop provides a focused environment in which postgraduate students can present and build on their research, work with experienced researchers and learn from the wide breath of inter-sectoral research experiences that participants bring to the event.
The workshop is aimed at supporting research students working in the broad field of development studies. Research areas covered by participants in 2013 range across a wide spectrum, including education, conflict, humanitarian intervention, economics, health, food security, human rights, social justice, migration and intercultural communication. Coupled with small group activities based on their stage and type of research, participants will have opportunities to engage with experienced researchers from a variety of sectoral backgrounds to explore the different research demands confronting them, including in the areas of film and documentary making, donor agencies, non-governmental agencies, academic institutions, media and research for activism and advocacy.
About DSA Ireland: DSA Ireland is a unique, cross-sectoral forum that promotes innovation in discussion and debate on research for development among the development community in Ireland. It seeks to establish, maintain and develop a knowledge hub that will facilitate a dynamic network of individuals and institutions – mainly Higher Education Institutions and NGOs - who are committed to high quality research on development with a view to identifying and addressing the key development challenges both locally and globally. DSA Ireland is managed by a steering committee that is elected at the annual AGM. In December 2013, this will take place in Galway and will be organised around its annual conference, for which a call for papers will be released later this year.  For more information about the workshop and DSA Ireland, please go to: http://www.dsaireland.org

Wednesday 26th June: UCD Institute of Food and Health Policy Workshop- “An Irish Perspective on Nutrition in Development Studies--‐ Current challenges and future potential”

Ireland has an excellent international track record in research and education which involves the four constituent universities of the Irish University Nutrition Alliance (www.iuna.net), established in 1992 and still very active in collaborative research and teaching. However, whilst Ireland is also strong in the area of development, we lack any formal structures for the education and training of individuals in the general area of nutrition in development studies. The Institute of Food and Health at University College Dublin is hosting this workshop to explore the needs of stakeholders in international nutrition and the options of the third level institutions in Ireland to deliver on those needs. The workshop will draw on the experience of UK universities in this field and will explore the needs of the Irish aid agencies. The workshop will lead to a short report to help shape policy on training needs for those working in the area of nutrition in developing countries.
To register please contact Dr Geraldine Quinn at geraldine.quinn@ucd.ie or on (01) 716 2808. There is no registration fee to attend this meeting
