The Grattan Scholars

Background
The School of Social Sciences and Philosophy is at the forefront of research and teaching in Ireland across the disciplines of economics, philosophy, political science and sociology. All four departments are rated highly in international research evaluations and our academic staff include some of the leading scholars in Ireland.

The School has developed a new Scholarship Programme - The Grattan Scholars - with the aim of advancing cutting-edge social science research and teaching. In a rapidly changing global environment such knowledge is central to our economic and social wellbeing, growth and development.

The Grattan Scholars are a cohort of exceptional PhD students whose work will have a real impact on Trinity and in helping to understand the evolving challenges facing society. Teaching is also an important part of the Scholars remit, contributing to the academic life of the School while enriching the students' learning opportunities.

The Grattan Scholars Programme has been established with the generous support of Trinity College alumni and friends.

2013 Grattan Scholarships
In the second year of the programme, three scholarships are to be awarded to PhD students of outstanding talent, from Ireland and abroad. Scholarships will address a range of research topics within the School.

Each scholarship is fully-funded, covering fees (EU or non-EU) and an annual stipend of €20,000 for four years.  Grattan Scholars are required to engage in teaching-related activities to a maximum of 6 hours per week during the teaching term.

Grattan Scholars will be chosen not only for their scholarly achievements, but also for their commitment to teaching and ambition to understand and improve society through their research and education.

The deadline for applications is 31 March, 2013. Applicants must meet of course the entry requirements to the PhD in the relevant discipline area. Please note that applicants should indicate the relevant research topic and their interest in The Grattan Scholars programme in their PhD application.

The School would like to thank alumni and friends including the UK Trust for TCD, the J-P Foundation London and Susannah McAleese for their generosity in funding the 2013 scholarships.

2012 Grattan Scholars

The Grattan Scholars programme was launched in autumn 2012 with the first two scholarships being awarded to the following students:

  • Development is a key research strength of the School, especially in economics. Christina Kinghan is undertaking research on "The Foundations of Micro-Enterprise Growth and Expansion: A Development Perspective" under the supervision of Professor Carol Newman in the Economics Department.
  • Sara Mitchell is researching a thesis on "Synergies from Geographic Clustering of Creative Workers" under the supervision of John O'Hagan, Professor of Economics. Cultural economics has assumed increasing significance in Ireland in recent years where culture and creativity are seen as possible keys to sustained economic recovery.

The School would like to thank the UK Trust for TCD, John Pearson and Rupert Pennant-Rea for their generosity in funding these two scholarships.
