Facts and Figures

  • While the School was only founded in 2005, when Schools became the basic units of the College, Trinity has a long history in social science and philosophy education:
    • The Chair of Political Economy was established in 1832.
    • The Chair of Moral Philosophy was established at Trinity College in 1837.
    • Political Science has been taught at Trinity College since the middle of the nineteenth century with the Chair of Political Science being established in 1960.
    • The Chair of Sociology was established in 1974.
  • The School is at the forefront of research and teaching in Ireland across the disciplines of economics, philosophy, political science and sociology. All four departments are rated highly in international research evaluations. In the 2011 QS World University Rankings for Social Sciences:
    • TCD was the only Irish university to make it into the top 50 for both Sociology, and Politics and International Studies, ranking them 48th and 50th in the world respectively. 
    • Sociology was also ranked 11th, and Politics and International Studies 15th in Europe, further highlighting the College’s international reputation for excellence in scholarship and research. 
    • Trinity’s Department of Economics was ranked in the top 100.
    • Trinity’s Department of Philosophy was ranked in the top 100 in the 2011 QS Arts and Humanities rankings. 
  • The School is home to over 1,300 undergraduate students and almost 50 academic staff members.
  • In 2010/2011, the School secured €1,300,000 in research income.
  • There are over 9,000 School alumni.
