Sociology and Social Policy

Studying Sociology through SSP (Sociology and Social Policy)

The Sociology and Social Policy degree is run jointly between the Department of Sociology and the Department of Social Work and Social Studies. Since the degree combines social theory and research with an exploration of social policy, you will be doing more sociology courses than students taking the other options listed here, particularly in the early years. However, you also take introductory courses in the other social sciences in your first year (Economics and Political Science), and may take further options in these areas in your second and third years.

In your final year, you focus on the two main areas of the degree, doing a course in Social Policy alongside two options chosen from a list available in Sociology, in addition to an independent dissertation. Your dissertation is an independent piece of social research which will be carried out under the supervision of a member of the lecturing staff in either Sociology or in Social Policy.

For more information please see Sociology and Social Policy Course Office website information and also study the Sociology Undergraduate Handbook (PDF, 922KB).
