Prospective Postgraduates
The Department of Sociology offers two postgraduate programmes
MPHIL IN RACE, ETHNICITY, CONFLICT
The MPhil is run by the Department of Sociology
The MPhil in Race, Ethnicity, Conflict continues the MPhil in Ethnic and Racial Studies established by the Department of Sociology in Trinity College in 1997. The timing was good: Ireland's long-running ethno-national conflict was about to end, and in the same moment Ireland, traditionally a country of emigration, was about to become an immigration destination. The MPhil is run by the Department of Sociology whose members have extensive publishing record in this area.
Upon successful completion, the programme grants students a Master of Philosophy in Race, Ethnicity, Conflict. The full 12-months programme begins in September each year, and consists of two full-year core modules, several elective one semester modules and a dissertation. In addition, the programme hosts seminar series, workshops and international conferences, and is linked with many activists and NGOs in this field.
APPLICATIONS AND DEADLINES: Rolling deadline from 10 December 2010 to 30 June 2011. All applications to Graduate Admissions online through www.pac.ie/tcd

MS IN EUROPEAN EMPLOYMENT STUDIES
MSc in European Employment Studies
The Irish labour market is interwoven with that of Europe as a whole; much Irish employment policy stems from the European Union; the regulation of employment is one distinctive feature of the European Social Model. Against this background, the new graduate programme in European Employment Studies at TCD provides a rigorous understanding of these issues by linking the sociology of work to industrial relations, human resource management and public policy.
The postraduate diploma (PGradDip) and the MSc both comprise substantive modules on different aspects of work and employment policy; they are designed for students whose current or planned career deals with employment issues whether in the private or public sector. The MSc will equip students with the necessary research skills which are increasingly required for a contemporary career, be it in market research, public policy or the academia. It includes several modules on research methods and a dissertation; it is especially appropriate for those planning a research career whether in a policy or academic context.

PHD PROGRAMME
The PhD programme offers Graduate students the opportunity to develop their theoretical and research skills in completing a self-defined research project under the supervision of an experienced staff member. This is aided by structured training in the first year in the form of a course in Social Research Methodology and a tailored Reading Course. POSTGRADUATE HANDBOOK
If you are interested in applying for a post-graduate study or need further information, please contact the Postgraduate Co-ordinator, Dr.Peter Mühlau (muhlaup@tcd.ie), tel: +353 1 8962669.
Entry requirements
Entry to the MPhil is competitive and normally restricted to graduates who have achieved an upper second class honour degree, or higher from an established university. GPA scores of at least 3.5, or equivalent, are expected from international applicants. In exceptional cases, applicants without a primary degree (or an upper second class degree or higher) may be accepted directly into the programme if they can demonstrate that they possess the equivalent of a good first degree. In such cases, consideration will be given to applicants who have relevant academic qualifications, publications and positive academic references. The following criteria will also be taken into account: (a) Work experience in areas related to the field of specialisation (b) The quality of the statement of interest provided by each applicant. Applicants seeking admission in this category will, where practicable, be called for interview.
Application and deadlines
