Sociology Welcomes MSc Comparative Social Change StudentsThe second intake of the joint MSc in Comparative Social Change, directed by Professor Daniel Faas, has commenced their studies today. 15 students from 5 countries will study key aspects of social change both in Trinity and UCD over the coming year. -
Sociology PhD Student Winner of IRC CompetitionThe Sociology Department is delighted that David Cichon PhD Student is the winner of an IRC Competition. IRC awardees were invited to submit images from their research. The winning images will feature on the IRC website. -
TCD Researchers Awarded Funding from Health Research Board of IrelandAn interdisciplinary team including Prof Richard Layte (Head of Sociology) and Dr Cathal McCrory (TILDA Senior Research Fellow) have been awarded €750,000 from the Health Research Board of Ireland. The project investigates an allostatic load framework for understanding social differences in health and mortality drawing on The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing. -
New Research by Prof Daniel Faas: Pupils don’t want to be separated for Religious EducationSociology Professor, Daniel Faas, led the first systematic empirical study on the Community National Schools, recommending an end to belief-specific teaching, a new role and dialogue between school-parents-parish, and changes to initial teacher education. -
Former Taoiseach John Bruton gives Annual Henry Grattan LectureJohn Bruton gave the School of Social Sciences and Philosophy’s annual Henry Grattan lecture hosted by the Embassy of Ireland in London. The lecture titled “New Fault lines in Europe.....the political consequences of Brexit” was chaired by Head of School Professor Gail McElroy. -

Trinity Sociologist Speaks at European Commission EventProfessor Daniel Faas spoke about “Educational Integration of Migrants and Refugees in Europe” at the EU-US Young Leaders Summit in Brussels, hosted by the European Commission, the European External Action Service and the US Department of State. -
Head of Sociology Delivers TEDx TalkProfessor Richard Layte, spoke at the recent TEDx Trinity Event. His talk focused on giving insight into reasons for the rise of Nationalism and Populism in recent years. Prof Layte is cited as being one of the main inspirations for setting up the society. -
Two IRC Postgraduate Scholarships awarded to SociologyPhilomena Mullen (Supervisor: Prof. Daniel Faas) and David Dunne (Supervisor: Dr. David Landy) have been awarded the prestigious PhD scholarship for their work on mixed-race Irish women in institutional care, and theories of ‘nativism’ as technologies of Western intervention. -

Anne Holohan Awarded H2020 Funding for ProjectDr Anne Holohan is Coordinator of a €2m H2020 project 'Gaming for Peace', building an online role-playing game to train personnel in Conflict Prevention and Peacebuilding missions. The project will build a base curriculum and embed it in the game to provide a learning experience in the soft skills of communication, cooperation, gender awareness and cultural competency. -

‘Growing Up In Ireland’ Report Examines Impact of ChildcareThe report ‘Non-Parental Childcare and Child Cognitive Outcomes at Age Five’, co-authored by Frances McGinnity and Helen Russell, Adjunct Professors of Sociology, found that the key influences on children’s cognitive development are gender, language spoken at home, number of older siblings, parents’ education and the home learning environment. -

Religious education in state-funded schools should include the study of humanism and faiths outside of Christianity, argues sociologist Prof Daniel Faas.
