About the Course
The Degree in Clinical Speech and Language Studies (Undergraduate Course, Code - TR007) is of 4 years duration and leads to a B.Sc. Honours degree in Clinical Speech and Language Studies. The course is part of the School of Linguistic, Speech and Communication Sciences at the university and students participate in a range of courses offered to members of other disciplines. Graduates of the course are professionally recognised by the professional organisations in Ireland and the United Kingdom.
First Year (Junior Freshman)
Theory
Anatomy; linguistics; phonetics; physiology; pre-clinical skills; clinical practice; psychology; speech and hearing.
Clinical Practice
Pre-clinical work includes visits to healthcare settings, residential settings and schools.
Modules for examination are as follows:
- Speech and hearing (5 credits)
- Applied neuro-anatomy (10 credits)
- Social psychology and lifespan development (5 credits)
- Phonetics (10 credits)
- Linguistics: Language, mind and society; Introduction to Syntax; Introduction to CHILDES (15 credits)
- Physiology (5 credits)
Pre-Clinical practice: Students are required to achieve a pass grade in continuous assessment assignments in (a) clinical practice (5 credits) and (b) pre-clinical skills (5 credits).
Students are required to achieve a mark of 35% or higher in each component of language, mind and society; introduction to syntax; and introduction to CHILDES in order to pass this paper.
Second Year (Senior Freshman)
Theory
Speech and language pathology; psychology; linguistics; phonetics; broad curriculum.
Clinical Practice
Clinical observation and practice.
Modules for examination are as follows:
- Assessment: speech, voice, fluency (15 credits)
- Assessment: language and communication (15 credits)
- Cognitive and Neuropsychology (5 credits)
- Linguistics and bilingualism (5 credits)
- Broad Curriculum (5 credits)
Students are required to achieve a pass grade in continuous assessment examinations in clinical phonetics and experimental phonetics (5 credits)
Independent of any mark achieved by students on continuous assessment assignments, students are required to achieve a mark of at least 35% on the examination papers Assessment: Speech Voice Fluency and Assessment: Language and Communication and Cognitive and Neuropsychology in order to be considered satisfactory.
Clinical Practice
Students are required to present at clinical practicum assessment during the year (10 credits).
Third Year (Junior Sophister)
Theory
Speech and Language Pathology; discourse analysis; neurology; psychiatry; research.
Clinical Practice
Clinical observation and practice.
Modules for examination are as follows:
- Intervention: speech voice fluency (10 credits)
- Intervention: language and communication (15 credits)
- Neurology (2.5 credits)
- Psychiatry (2.5 credits)
- Discourse analysis and development (10 credits)
- Principles and methods of Empirical Research.(5 credits)
Students are allocated to supervisors for the project in human communication during Hilary term in accordance with the rules of the school. Students are required to achieve a pass grade (40%) in continuous assessment examinations in principles and methods of empirical research and in a research assignment (5 credits).
Independent of any mark achieved by students on continuous assessment assignments, students are required to achieve a mark of at least 35% on the examination papers Intervention: Speech Voice Fluency and Intervention: Language and Communication in order to be considered satisfactory. Students are required to pass both sections of papers 3 and 4 above.
Clinical Practice
Students will be required to achieve a pass grade in clinical assessments during the year (10 credits).
Fourth Year (Senior Sophister)
Theory
Speech and language pathology; psychology; research
Clinical Practice
Clinical observation and practice.
Modules for examination are as follows
- Management: speech, voice, fluency, dysphagia(10 credits)
- Management: language and communication (10 credits)
- Counselling principles and practice (5 credits)
- Reflective Studies (5 credits)
Students will be assessed on a project in human communication, which continues from the work done in the Junior Sophister year (15 credits). Students are required to achieve a pass grade (40 per cent) in continuous assessment examinations in ethics and clinical administration skills.
Clinical Practice
Students will be assessed in clinical practice during the year (15 credits). In order to be returned as satisfactory in clinical practice, a student must receive a mark of 40% or more, with no mark lower than 36% for any single component of clinical practice other than the summer case report and case study. Students are required to submit satisfactory certification of clinical attendance prior to the end of Trinity term, in accordance with the regulations of the school.
Practice Education
The undergraduate Clinical Education programme has been developed by the department, in association with the profession, to facilitate the integration of theory into practice and the development of professional skills and clinical competencies that will enable students to join the speech and language therapy profession. Admissions
