Research Interests
My main research interests are in the area of voice pathology, prevention, diagnosis and management:
- Laryngopharyngeal reflux & dysphonia: the co-morbidity of symptoms of laryngopharyngeal reflux in patients with symptoms of dysphonia and/or vocal tract discomfort.
- Cough, irritable larynx syndrome and other voice disorders due to irritative etiologies
- Communicative satisfaction & perception of male-to-female trans-sexuals
- The impact of voice disorders among teachers & other professional voice users: risk factors, vocal complaints, treatment-seeking behaviour, knowledge of voice care, and voice-related absenteeism & presenteeism.

Teaching/Supervision
My undergraduate teaching concentrates on voice and voice disorders & assessment and treatment of vocal tract discomfort and vocal quality problems. Additionally I contribute to modules on assessment, treatment and management of speech, voice & fluency disorders, surgical voice restoration following head & neck cancer, pre-clinical skills and research methods. At postgraduate level I contribute to the teaching research modules on the M. Sc in Dysphgia and I supervise M. Sc and M. Ed students undertaking research in the area of voice, speech or swallowing disorders. Additionally I supervise undergraduate students undertaking research in the areas of voice and voice disorders.
