Description

Psycholinguistics, with a particular emphasis on bilingualism, classroom second language acquistion and children's attitudes to and experiences of language learning. Policy-oriented research on language learning and teaching, particularly national monitoring and evaluation at the system level. Language programme evaluation, particularly in relation to new initiatives and approaches. Classroom observation and the study of teaching and interaction processes in language education. Language maintenance and revival, minority languages, immersion education. Immediate processing of spoken language and communication failure in dialogue and discourse.

The research work of the Department spanned language teaching and learning at pre-school, primary and post-primary levels and dealt with Irish and modern European languages. I have supervised the work of a large number of postgraduate research assistants and teachers on secondment to ITÉ. 1978-2004
