Roles and Responsibilities

The Senior Tutor is the Annual Officer responsible to the Provost for the Tutorial System in College which includes the Postgraduate Advisory Service.

This includes the recruitment, training, retention and continuing further training of the College Tutors and Advisors.

The Senior Tutor is a member of University Council, sits on a number of Council Committees and chairs the Student Financial Assistance Committees.

The role also includes liaising with the professional student services in College, such as the Disability, Counselling and Health Services, and the sabbatical officers of the TCD Students’ Union.

Undergraduate Student Support Officer

The Student Support Officer (Undergraduate) is responsible for providing advice and support to undergraduate students, particularly in the area of financial assistance.

The Student Support Officer is Secretary to the Financial Assistance Committeee. The Student Support Officer ex officio attends meetings of, inter alia, The Minchin Bursary Committee, The Services Safety Committee, The Frederick Purser Committee, The Postgraduate Financial Appeals committee, The Trinity Access Programme appeals committee along with a number of working groups across the University.

The role also involves working closely with the professional student services in College, such as the Disability, Counselling and Health Services, and the sabbatical officers of the TCD Students’ Union. The Student Supports Officer also liaises regularly with the HEA and the EU in relation to financial assistance resources for students and reports on such expenditure to College, the HEA and the EU regularly.

 

Martin McAndrew, Postgraduate Student Support Officer

The Postgraduate Student Support Officer is a member of the Senior Tutor’s Office team, with responsibility for coordinating the Postgraduate Advisory Service (encompassing case management, business operations, administration & reporting) and providing frontline, confidential and free support and information to postgraduates. 

Other duties include providing, on referral, access to named academics to provide independent advice, advocacy, and assistance via the panel of Postgraduate Advisors and delivering a suite of complementary supports including informal mediation, workshops & training, and financial assistance to postgraduates. 

In addition, this officer hosts Trinity’s annual postgraduate general orientation sessions, can support postgraduate students in Dignity and Respect cases, and may act as a Disability Inquiry Officer, if required.

The Postgraduate Student Support Officer works closely with Directors of Teaching and Learning (Postgraduate) and Course Coordinators on student cases, and liaises regularly with the Graduate Students’ Union,  the Dean of Graduate Studies, Academic Registry and professional services in Trinity and externally.

The Postgraduate Student Support Officer ex officio attends meetings of, inter alia, the Graduate Studies Committee, Orientation Steering Group and the Fitness to Study Advisory Group. This officer is Secretary to the Postgraduate Financial Assistance Committee.

The current Postgraduate Student Support Officer is Martin McAndrew. Martin joined the Senior Tutor's Office in 2018 having previously held roles in Student Counselling and the Disability Services.

Caroline Campbell, Executive Officer/Student Support

The Executive Officer in the Senior Tutor's Office is a complex and many faceted job as its primary role is to act as an access point for students in distress and for tutors who require information or help with a student case as well as running an efficient office.

The Executive Officer assists the Student Support Officers and the Senior Tutor with the administration of the Tutorial Service. Specific duties and responsibilities are allocated by both the Senior Tutor and the Student Administrator.

The Executive Officer is responsible for supporting students and the growing number of tutors (290) and for the efficient running of the Tutorial Service, including acting as a referral point for students, offering support and advice to tutors, assisting the Administrative Officer with financial assistance duties, managing key relationships with internal and external departments and front of house.

The current Executive Officer is Caroline Campbell. Caroline starting working in Trinty college in 2004 (22 years of experience) firstly in the School of Medicine as they transformed from a 6 to 5 year Medical degree course. Caroline then held the full office support in Hispanic studies before joining the Senior Tutor's Office in April 2018.
