1. Getting Started

To access the Research Support System: http://isservices.tcd.ie/portal/
If accessing this for the first time, you may need to register. To do this, please click on 'Register' and entere please your usual network username and password when prompted. When you have successfully registered, click on the 'Login' button. Enter your username and password when prompted. At the next screen click on 'Research Support System'.

2. The Research Support System Menu page

To access and update your full profile, click on Curriculum Vitae. To access and update specific parts of your profile only, click on 'Your Publications', 'Research Interests', etc.
You may leave parts of the profile empty if they are not relevant to you. Looking at how others have completed their profile may help with this - at the main Research Support System screen click on Researcher Directory, then click on a letter on the A-Z list e.g. 'L' for Lloyd, 'H' for Hegarty, etc. Click on a name - you will be able to view, but not change, the profiles of other TCD colleagues.

3. General Commands

help icon Click on the questionmark at the top right hand corner of the screen for Help.

add icon The green plus symbol beside a category heading: click on this to add information to a section of the CV, or to add another part to a section (eg. each subsequent Award, Honour etc.)

edit icon The pencil symbol at the beginning of a section: click on this to edit this part of the profile.

delete icon The red X at the end of a line: allows you to delete that part or section

Thsi section will be exported to Expertise Ireland This icon marks the sections of your profile which can be exported to Expertise Ireland.

Display on Public CV? Yes/No: the option to reveal or conceal the data on your CV is available from within each section. 'Yes' is the default selection. You may change this by selecting 'No' in the box at the end of each section.

4. Your Curriculum Vitae

Name: your name is automatically selected from Staff Office records. Data in this section is exported to Expertise Ireland upon approval.

Gender: your gender is automatically selected from Staff Office records.

Address: your College address is automatically selected from Staff Office records. This is the only address required for the Research Support System CV. Data in this section is exported to Expertise Ireland upon approval.

Academic Title: Your academic title will be added from Staff Office records. Data in this section is exported to Expertise Ireland upon approval.

Telephone: your TCD telephone phone number is required here. No other telephone number is required. This information will be added from its centralised source within TCD.

Fax: Enter your TCD fax number is here. No other fax number is required.

Web: Enter your TCD webpage address (URL) here. No other webpage address is required.

Email: your TCD email address has been automatically selected from its centralised source within TCD. No other email address is required. Data in this section is exported to Expertise Ireland upon approval.

Notes: You may add additional contact information here eg. the address of another website.

Image: Your photograph (from your staff ID card) is available here, however it is hidden until you choose to reveal it (The on-screen message says 'Image not available'). Select 'Show Image' to make your photograph accessible. If you change your mind at any stage, select 'Hide Image'.

Biography: You may enter a brief biographical description here. This is a 'free text' area, allowing you to express yourself as you wish. This area can be used to summarise the main parts of the rest of your CV.

'Expertise Ireland' description of Research Interests:
This is a 'free text' area which may contain a summary of your current research interests and activities (up to a maximum of 4,000 characters). Data in this section is exported to Expertise Ireland upon approval - whatever you enter here will appear in the blue box on the first page of your expert profile in Expertise Ireland.

Professional Qualifications: Enter information on your graduate or postgraduate qualifications here. This can include historical and recent qualifications. Also include any special certification you may have.

Representations: Enter information on any occasion when you have represented TCD at local, national, or international level. (Include public lectures and representation on editorial boards). Data in this section is exported to Expertise Ireland upon approval.

Professional & Administrative Functions: Enter details of committees and other administrative areas you may have worked on within TCD. This can include current and historical functions. Enter the title of the committee or group, the capacity served, and the dates covered (to-from).

Membership of Professional Institutions: Enter information on the professional associations or societies of which you are a member. Data in this section is exported to Expertise Ireland upon approval.

Awards and Honours: Enter information on any awards or honours you have received (historically and recently). Data in this section is exported to Expertise Ireland upon approval.

Education Details: Enter information on post-secondary level institutions attended (historical and recent). Please include the dates if you know them (to-from). Enter the details of the first educational institution and click the 'Create' button. You may add further educational institutions (one at a time), by clicking on the Education Details add icon symbol again.

Languages: Enter information on any language you can speak, read, or write. The English language may be omitted. Choose a language from the pick-list. Then choose your level of fluency in that language. When finished, click the ''Create' button. You may add further languages (one at a time), by clicking on the Languages add iconsymbol again. Data in this section is exported to Expertise Ireland upon approval.

Career Details: Enter your current and historical employment details here. This employment history may be academic or otherwise. Enter your first Employment details and click the 'Create' button. You can add further Employment details (one at a time), by clicking on the Career Details add icon symbol again.

Research Interests:
A choice of 3 sets of keywords is available. Please tick the relevant box. Another option - to create your own keywords - may also be chosen. Data in this section is exported to Expertise Ireland upon approval.

Research Projects:
You may enter the following details of your (current and historical) Research Projects here: Project title, project summary, funding agency, programme, type of project, start date, end date, person months committed. Data in this section is exported to Expertise Ireland upon approval.

Publications:
To enter the details of a publication, first click on the add icon for this section. Choose a publication type from the list (Book, Book Chapter, Journal Article, etc.), and then click on 'Next step'. Enter the details on the form (the * indicates a required field), and then click on 'Next step'. The screen will display the formatted publication record for you to check. You also have the opportunity at this screen to search for and select co-authors within TCD. This allows the new publication record to be automatically added to another individual's TCD Research Support System profile. Select 'Apply' or 'Close' to complete this entry ('Close' brings you back to your list of publications). You may add the details of further publications (one at a time), by clicking on the Publications add icon symbol again.
Sort your publications by date or by publication type by clicking the underlined heading at the top of the list of publications.
Data in this section is exported to Expertise Ireland upon approval.

References: You may enter details of your referees here. The Name and Address of each referee is mandatory within this section. Email, Telephone and Details are optional. You may add further referees (one at a time), by clicking on the References add icon symbol again.

5. Your Research Interests

Rather than going into your full Curriculum Vitae, you may quickly make changes to just your list of research interests by clicking on this link on the Menu page. A choice of 3 sets of keywords is available. Please tick the relevant box. Another option - to create your own keywords - may also be chosen.

6. Your Publications

Rather than going into your full Curriculum Vitae, you may get directly into your list of publications by clicking on this link on the Menu page. Additions and amendments may then be made, as outlined under Publications (above).

7. Your Publications from External Sources [the ISI file of TCD records]

Records have been purchased for TCD publications from the last 22 years of the Web of Science (Includes Arts & Humanities, Science and Social Sciences Citation Indexes) and can be claimed by authors for inclusion in their lists of publications. On the Menu page click on Publications from External Sources , search for your papers, and tick the box to claim for automatic inclusion in your profile.

8. Export of Your Profile to Expertise Ireland

An important part of the Research Support System is the regular export of data to Expertise Ireland (also known as the All Island Expertise Portal). As soon as you have completed your profile, please select 'Approved for Export' from the box at the top of the screen.

The following parts of your profile will be exported to the Expertise Ireland:

  • Your Name and Contact details
  • AIEP Description of Research Interests
  • Representations
  • Membership of Professional Institutions, Associations, Societies
  • Languages
  • Research Interests
  • Research Projects
  • Publications
