Research Expertise
Description
Research interest in chronic illness management and self-managment. Research areas include urology and renal care including vascular access in haemodialysis patients, dialysis adequacy, renal nurse prescribing and impact on anaemia management in persons with ESKD, infection prevention and control within the haemodialysis environment, prevention of healthcare-associated central venous catheter-related infection in haemodialysis patients, systematic reviews including Cochrane Reviews, and interventional research. Healthcare technology including mobile technology for self management in persons with chronic illness e.g., chronic kidney disease and respiratory diseases. The use of technology to improve social/cultural experiences of clients with dementia living in residential settings. Other research interests include inappropriate attendance in emergency department.Projects
- Title
- PHMB antimicrobial foam dressing for the prevention of infection in patients with an external fixator
- Summary
- The study is an interventional quasi-experimental design whereby study participants will have their pin sites dressed with a PHMB antimicrobial foam dressing. Findings from this group of participants will be compared to a similar cohort of patients whose pin sites were dressed with dry gauze or Inadine/Betadine tulle

- Systematic Review on Chlorhexidine Gluconate as an antiseptic skin solution for the prevention of catheter-related infections in patients with intravascular catheters
- Summary
- The review will be guided by the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions (Higgins & Green 2011) and the PICO acronym (participants, interventions, comparisons and outcomes). Our objective is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of chlorhexidine based antiseptic solutions on the incidence of catheter-related infections in comparison to other chlorhexidine or non CHG antiseptic skin solutions in patients with indwelling vascular catheters.
