Biography

Dr Margaret McCann joined the School in 2005 having previous lectured in the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. She lectures at undergraduate and postgraduate level which includes small and large groups of students. Teaching areas include management of chronic illness including patient/client education and self-managment, renal care including haemodialysis, nephrology, peritoneal dialysis, transplantation, urology and infection prevention and control. Other teaching interests include the methodology underpinning randomised controlled trials, interventional designed studies and systematic reviews investigating the effectiveness of healthcare interventions.

Dr McCann has supervised MSc and PhD students. Her research interests are in chronic illness management, the use of digital health and smart technology in supporting patients/clients education, self-management and independence. She has a particular interest in randomised controlled trial and interventional designed studies that focus on the effectiveness of digital health and smart technology, and healthcare interventions. Other research interests include renal care, infection prevention and control, and Systematic Reviews.

Dr McCann was Head of the General Nursing Discipline, School of Nursing and Midwifery, Trinity College Dublin from 2014-2017.

Research Expertise

Description

Research interest in chronic illness management, self-managment and digital health. Healthcare technology including mobile technology for self management in persons with chronic illness e.g., chronic kidney disease and respiratory diseases. The use of technology to improve social/cultural experiences of clients with dementia living in residential settings. Other research areas include vascular access in haemodialysis patients, dialysis adequacy, renal nurse prescribing and impact on anaemia management in persons with ESKD, infection prevention and control, systematic reviews including Cochrane Reviews, and interventional research.
