Description

Interdisciplinary, in the general area of nano- or atom-scale science and technology. Recent and current activities include: Atomic Force Microscopy and Nanomechanics: New techniques for atomic resolution, force spectroscopy and energy dissipation at single chemical bonds, structure and properties of highly confined liquids including water, surface capillary effects and adsorption, localised electrostatic forces, imaging of bio-molecules STM imaging and surface electronic structure: applications to oxides, catalysts, and thin films. Novel measurement of forces and currents between individual atoms, and application to single atom positioning and molecule manipulation. Nanoindentation and contact mechanics: Properties of thin films, microtribology, adhesion, fracture, phase changes and chemo-mechanical effects. Loss processes (G"(w)) in polymers and biomaterials at nanometre volumes. Mechanics of agglomerates and granular materials. Nano-plasticity. Dielectric breakdown in thin films. Polymer imprinting for novel lithography of nanostructures. Theoretical atomistic modelling of surfaces, tip-surface interactions, atomic scale deformation and inelasticity, and of nanometre structures. Research group typically comprises 3-4 post-docs, 4-5 students and a visiting Professor.
