Biography

I am a Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Clinical Medicine and Lab Manager of the Meath Foundation Research Labs at Tallaght Hospital. My translational research focuses on the role of mitochondria and metabolism in human inflammation. I graduated from TCD with a degree in Human Genetics in 2000. Following graduation I worked for a year as a Research Assistant in the Department of Human Genetics at the University of Chicago. I then returned to Ireland where I obtained my PhD in Biochemistry from UCC in 2005. I began my postdoctoral research in the School of Biochemistry and Immunology, TCD with Prof. Kingston Mills (2005-2007) where my research focussed on the evaluation of bacterial toxins as potential therapeutic immunomodulators. I subsequently worked with Prof. Catherine Godson in the Diabetes Complications Research Centre at the Conway Institute in UCD (2007-2009). In 2009 I was awarded a Postdoctoral career Development Fellowship from the Health Research Board to study the role and mechanisms of regulation of IHG-1, a novel mitochondrial mediator of fibrosis. From 2013-2016 I was the senior scientist within the Trinity Health Kidney Centre investigating the role of immune cell metabolism in the autoimmune condition ANCA vasculitis.

Research Expertise

My research focuses on the role of mitochondrial biogenesis, dynamics and respiration and glucose metabolism in cell signalling and function. My current primary area of research is ANCA-associated vasculitis, a severe multi-system autoimmune condition affecting the microvasculature. In its most severe form it manifests with rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis (RPGN) and vasculitis of the respiratory tract. My research addresses the following questions: 1- What role do mitochondria play in ANCA-associated vasculitis 2- Is cellular metabolism altered in ANCA-associated vasculitis
