Research Expertise
Description
I am interested in the mechanisms that drive and regulate the inflammatory response. This includes how the innate immune system functions in sensing infections and in eliciting an immune response. I am also interested in how the innate immune system impacts the adaptive immune response in health and how this is dysregulated in diseases such as sepsis, cancer and autoimmunity. My current research focuses on exploring native Irish plant extracts for bioactive compounds that block the innate immune response. To achieve this goal I am collaborating with NatPro here in TCD. I am also interested in how aspects of the innate immune system such as inflammasomes and an inflammatory form of cell death known as pyroptosis can be harnessed in the treatment of cancers. My interest in the area of cancer also extends to oncolytic viruses which may exert an anti-tumour response by activating inflammasomes and triggering pyroptotic cell death.Projects
