  • Title
    • Osteoporosis in Irish men: cost-of-illness, a qualitative exploration and preliminay economic evaluation of reducing the burden of illness.
  • Summary
    • Osteoporosis is defined as a skeletal disease with low bone mineral density increasing susceptibility to fragility fractures. Osteoporosis is less common in men than women, but remains a significant health problem for men with between 13-22% of men over 5 0 years expected to sustain an osteoporotic fracture. These fractures are responsible for significant morbidity which includes pain and suffering, loss of health related quality of life and loss of independence requiring home or residential care, as well as significant mortality. Despite this, osteoporosis in men remains underdiagnosed and undertreated. The overall aims of this study are to estimate the cost-of-illness of osteoporosis, to qualitatively explore the feasibility of establishing a national screening programme for osteoporosis in Irish men over 50 years and to undertake a preliminary economic evaluation of the cost-effectiveness of screening and treating osteoporosis. It is hoped that the findings from this study will give insights that may inform decision makers on the value of screening and treating men over 50 years for osteoporosis, to reduce the incidence of fragility fractures and the associated costs and consequences. The findings may also provide guidance on the design and execution of a fuller economic evaluation.
