Migration is one of the most important challenges faced by Ireland today. The choices and decisions concerning immigration that are currently being made will have a major impact on Irish society for this and future generations. Ireland has the opportunity to plan for and maximise the benefits of the economic, social and cultural contribution of immigrants to Ireland's society and economy, and to minimize the risks.
However, the coherent policies and cohesive society we wish to create for the future cannot be achieved without sound evidence of the actual and potential impact of immigration at every level. Trinity College Dublin, Ireland's international university, is located in the centre of a modern European capital that is experiencing extraordinary change. The university is in a unique position to help Ireland address the challenges and harness the opportunities arising from migration.
The Trinity Immigration Initiative brings together key elements of Trinity's research, teaching and contribution to society. It allows Trinity to play a strong role in the development of a more inclusive, multicultural society for Ireland.
The Research Programme on Diversity, Integration and Policy is the first major initiative of the Trinity Immigration Initiative. This programme is a unique and multidisciplinary suite of six interlocking projects which will:
- address key challenges posed by the unprecedented numbers of migrants arriving in Ireland in recent years
- help Irish society develop appropriate policies and practices for the new reality.
