Research Areas

ImmunologyInfection and immunity is a major research focus at TCD with involvement across a number of Schools. These include the School of Biochemistry, Microbiology, Dental School, School of Pharmacy and School of Medicine.

Research within these areas has focused on issues relating to:

  • innate immunity
  • lymphocyte migration
  • T cell biology
  • the role of specific cellular subsets in the regulation of the host immune response

In addition, there are major strengths within Microbiology, Clinical Microbiology and the Dental School with regard to understanding the nature of infectious agents and their contribution to disease. Major research themes within this area include themes related to:

  • vaccine and adjuvant development
  • suppression of inflammation
  • the identification of pathways involved in human disease, including both inflammatory diseases and malignancy

The combined strengths in both infection and immunity are also critical in developing an understanding of global infectious disease.
