Research

In addition to the events and seminars that are organised and hosted by the Plato Centre, the members of the Centre are engaged in research projects on an ongoing basis. Below you will find an account of the research projects, both recent and current, with which the members of the Centre are involved.

Professor John Dillon

Edition of Selected Tractates of Plotinus
John Dillon and Andrew Smith are currently engaged in editing a series of tractates of Plotinus for the Parmenides Press, the first of which should be published late next year. They are designed to embody new translations of the texts with a running commentary, alongh the lines of the French edition edited by Pierre Hadot.

Edition of De Abrahamo of Philo of Alexandria
John Dillon is currently working on an edition of the De Abrahamo of Philo of Alexandria, in cooperation with Professor Ellen Birnbaum of Boston University for the Philo of Alexandria Commentary Series due to be completed next spring.

Fragments of Iamblichus
He is also collaborating with Dr. Wolfgang Polleichner of Bochum (with whom he recently published the letters of Iamblichus, SBL 2009) on a collection of the remaining fragments of Iamblichus. Wolfgang Polleichner was a Trinity Long Room Hub fellow in the spring of 2011.

Cambridge History of Late Antiquity and Medieval Philosophy
John Dillon and Andrew Smith recently contributed to the new Cambridge History of Late Antiquity and Medieval Philosophy, edited by Lloyd Gerson, Due to be published early next year with chapters on Iamblichus and Porphyry respectively.

 

Professor Andrew Smith

Edition of Selected Tractates of Plotinus

Translation of the works of Plotinus:
Andrew Smith, John Dillon and others are currently working on producing a new translation of the works of Plotinus which will be edited by Lloyd Gerson.

Edition of Plotinus Ennead 1.6
Andrew Smith is also working on a new edition of Plotinus 1.6 On Beauty which will include a Greek text, a commentary and an introduction.
