This full-time course is aimed primarily at graduates intending to work or currently working in the formulation and drug delivery system design sectors of the human and veterinary pharmaceutical industries.

Admission

Applications will be accepted from those who:

  • Hold a good honours degree in a relevant science discipline
  • Hold an equivalent qualification with relevant professional experience
  • Otherwise satisfy the course admission committee that they have the ability to succeed and benefit from the course.

Please note that there will be no course run for the academic year 2012/2013

Applicants for this course should be made online through http://www.tcd.ie/courses/postgraduate/. An admissions committee will review all applications. Applicants are advised that they should submit a curriculum vitae with their application form in order to assist admission review. In particular, they should provide detailed syllabus information concerning previous academic courses they have completed. This will facilitate the admissions committee in confirming the applicant's suitability for the course and in determining whether exemptions from any course modules may be granted. Details of practical industrial experience should also be included where relevant.

Course content and structure

Syllabus
The course will be run over one academic year, on a modular basis with, each module being accompanied by a detailed workbook. The following modules will be offered: Fundamentals of Pharmaceutical Formulation, Pharmaceutical Preformulation, Unit Processes and Formulation Engineering, Formulation of Sterile Products, Biopharmaceutics and Pharmacokinetics for Pharmaceutical Technology, Molecular Pharmaceutics & Advanced Drug Delivery, Pharmaceutical Technology - Biotechnological Aspects, Regulatory Affairs, Pharmaceutical and Medical Nanotechnology. Site visits to pharmaceutical companies will be organised where appropriate to accompany the coursework.

Assessment

Assessment will take the form of written assignments to be completed in parallel with the modules under study, an annual written examination, and continuous practical assessment of the course, i.e. plant tours, practicals and tutorial marked assignments.
