Chaplaincy

There are four College chaplains who represent the four main Christian traditions in Ireland. They work closely together and function as an ecumenical chaplaincy. They are available to assist students and staff with many of the different matters that arise in college, and most significantly in spiritual and pastoral care. The chaplaincy is located in House 27 and is a place of welcome and friendship, where many students simply hang out and enjoy the free tea and coffee available in the common area. Don't let it pass you by that there is a free student lunch from 12.30pm – 2pm every Tuesday in the common area!

The chaplains are responsible for the magnificent Chapel building in Front Square. Every denomination shares this sacred space and regular services are held during semester. Alternative and contemplative worship experiences also take place every week. The joint ecumenical services are a highlight of the College year – so make sure you get them in your diary, e.g., the annual College carol service.

A variety of events and trips are organised by the chaplains – around Ireland and overseas. Taize, Palestine, South Africa and Ibiza have all been visited over the last few years! The chaplaincy exists to help students of all faiths and none, and they are happy to lend a hand to anyone needing help with spiritual guidance, faith development or pastoral support. They are also more than happy to direct students looking for links to their own denominations or faith. A Muslim prayer room is also available on campus. Details of the chaplains can be found online at www.tcd.ie/chaplaincy

The GSU also provides advice on academic and welfare issues faced by postgrads, and offers three main facilities: dedicated postgrad study space in the 1937 Reading Room, the GSU Common Room on the first floor of House 7, (open daily from 8am to 7pm Monday to Friday) and the GSU office in Room 28, House 6. Tutorial Service

Each undergraduate student at Trinity is assigned a personal tutor on entry to College. Tutors are members of the academic staff who are specifically appointed and trained to provide personal and academic support, in addition to their normal academic duties. It is a confidential service supported and co-ordinated by the Senior Tutor's Office which is located on the ground floor in House 27. Your tutor details will be available on the My TCD Portal within a week of you accepting your place. Further information on the tutorial service is available on our website www.tcd.ie/Senior_Tutor/

How can a tutor help? Your tutor is your first port of call for guidance, help and advice.

  • Difficulties settling into College life?
  • Not convinced you're in the right course?
  • Finding it hard to write that first essay?
  • Too many things to do at any one time?
  • Too ill to attend College?
  • Not feeling ready for that test next week?
  • Things not going well at home?
  • Struggling with money?

These - and many others - are issues that many new students are facing. Your tutor can help. Your tutor will listen to you, explain what the regulations say, how College works and suggest sources of help, outline what solutions are available and in most cases, there are solutions. It's easier to speak to somebody you already know when the going gets rough, so it makes sense to meet your tutor as soon as possible. Your tutor is expecting a visit from you during Freshers' Week, so please keep your appointment.

Erasmus students are assigned an Academic Erasmus Coordinatorwho is a member of the academic staff and who may provide advice on such matters as choosing modules, assessments and exams. She/he will be a source of guidance throughout your time as an Erasmus Student.
