Outcome of 'Learning about how the Irish Government works' 26th September 2014

On the 26 September 2014 the national anti-bullying advocacy (NAAG) group ran the first ever workshop about how the Irish Government works. This workshop was for people with intellectual disabilities because the group felt that having access to educational opportunities such as this one was very important, information is power.
The idea to do this workshop came out of a meeting the group had last Christmas. Two members, Bill Roberts and David Hall wanted to really understand how the government really works. A sub-group was formed and this group worked on contacting members of the Government for help and support.

Two members of the Dáil contacted us and told us they would help us run the workshop. They were Senator Mary Moran and Finian McGrath TD. Over the summer the sub-group met with both Mary and Finian in the Dáil. We talked about what we wanted them to say and together planned the contents of the day.

Emer Costello also came to the workshop and talked about the European Union and what Members of the European Union do.
This workshop was very popular; 21 people came and we have 20 people on a waiting list to come to the next one. Feedback was very good.
People told us they liked the workshop because they felt they were listened too, got to ask questions and learned more about work the Irish Government works. People also said that they got to meet and talk to other people, got to talk about things that were important to them like the water charges, the need for jobs, more educational opportunities and respite services. The questions and answers session was a highlight for a lot of the group. It was agreed that the issues that were discussed on the day will be sent to Mary and Finian.
We will be running this workshop again next year.

Listen here to Senator Mary Moran mentioning this workshop on how the government works in the Dàil.

Team building day with the national anti-bullying advocacy group 12th September 2014

On the 12 September the national anti-bullying group took part in a team building day that was organised by Fiona Weldon (Advocacy Coordinator). In the morning time the group took part in a drumming session. This was led by Claire Finnegan. They learned about different drumming sounds, beats and rhythms, working together to form different sounds. All of the group enjoyed this activity and want to do it again.

Pictured below are of some of the national anti-bullying advocacy group taking part in the drumming session

In the afternoon Dr Eilionoir Flynn from NUI Galway explained to the group about the UN Convention and what Ireland needs to do to ratify it. The UN Convention is an agreement that sets out what countries have to do to make sure that disabled people have the same rights as everybody else.
They learned that:

  • Ireland is one of 3 countries that have not ratified the convention, the 2 other countries are the Netherlands and Finland
  • They have signed up to it but the have not said that they would do what is says yet
  • To ratify something means to agree to do what is written in the convention
  • Ireland has to change some of the laws like the new assistive decision make bill that is coming into law soon. Ireland is also looking at the sexual offences act because at the moment is against the law for people with intellectual disabilities to have intimate relationships
  • There is something in the convention called an optional protocol. This protocol is all about being able to check up to see if countries are doing what needs to be done to make sure that disabled people have the same rights as everyone else. This is a very good idea and the national anti-bullying advocacy group want Ireland to agree to have the optional protocol.
  • Having resverations in your agreement about the convention - some countries have signed up and have said yes to the convention but have not agreed to act on some parts of the convention. For examble Australia have said that not all people with intellectual disabilities can make decisions. We do not agree with this and believe that anyone can make an informed decision with the right support. The right support is about having support people in your life that are on your side. There should be no reservations when Ireland ratify's the convention.
