National Institute for Intellectual Disability (NIID) is one of Trinity College Dublin's most innovative initiatives.  It has a mission of promoting inclusion for people with intellectual disability through education, research and advocacy. One of its flagship projects is the internationally pioneering Certificate in Contemporary Living, the first full-time course for students with intellectual disabilities, offered within a third-level setting in Ireland. Through its other work in research and advocacy, NIID also seeks to raise awareness and understanding of the enablers and barriers in terms of the full inclusion in society of people with intellectual disability.

Business Partners support NIID and the students’ work experience

The workplace is one of the key sites for social inclusion. As part of the Certificate in Contemporary Living, each student  undertakes an internship in a company or organisation, providing a wonderfully enriching opportunity for both the student and their new workplace colleagues. In many cases, these work-place internships open up work or training opportunities for the young people. They also generally prove to be transforming experiences for the students and very rewarding for the staff who work alongside the student. We are deeply grateful to our NIID Business Partners who provide these work experience opportunities and sponsorships for students on the course. Being an NIID Business Partner is an imaginative way for companies and their staff to support social innovation and corporate social responsibility. We welcome enquiries from other companies interested in becoming NIID Business Partners in this important work.
