Trinity announces new Scholars and Fellows

9 April 2018

Students and academics gathered in Trinity College Dublin’s Front Square this morning to applaud the announcement of new Scholars and Fellows. There were scenes of joy and jubilation as the names of the students and academics were read out by the Provost of Trinity, Dr Patrick Prendergast. The College community, friends and families celebrated their wonderful achievement.

This year there are 73 Scholars, 16 Fellows and two Honorary Fellows.

“We are so proud of all our students and academics today who have become new Fellows and Scholars. This is always a special day for all of us when we celebrate their hard work and academic prowess,” said Provost, Dr Patrick Prendergast.

In order to become a Scholar, second year students study for special exams in January. It is a major achievement where students continue with their usual course work, and additionally study independently for these exams.  In becoming a Scholar they must demonstrate in depth knowledge and understanding of their subjects. This year’s Scholars come from a vast range of disciplines, from Mathematics to Midwifery, from Medicine to Philosophy, all of  whom made the grade.

Sixteen academics were also elected to Fellowship based on their research excellence. They come from a range of schools, including the Creative Arts, Law and Mathematics among others.

Additionally, two Honorary Fellows were announced. They were the Conolly Norman Professor of Old Age Psychiatry, Brian Lawlor, recognised nationally and internationally as an expert in dementia. He is Director of the Memory Clinic at St James's Hospital and the co-Director of the Global Brain Health Institute at Trinity College Dublin. He was joined by the   renowned poet and alumnus of Trinity, Dr Michael Longley who has won multiple awards for his poetry and was the former Ireland Professor of Poetry.

The announcement of Fellows and Scholars also marks the beginning of the annual Trinity Week, a long established celebration of College life. This year to celebrate Trinity Week, the Faculty of   Engineering, Mathematics and Science has put together a week of exciting events including a series of talks and activities around the theme of Energy.  Events are free and open to the public. A full programme of events can be found on: www.tcd.ie/trinityweek.
