PY4MP1 : SS Practical for Physics and Chemistry of Advanced Materials Students
Elements of the PY4MP1 module
This module combines a major research project with components of general problem solving in physics and chemistry, and in critical analysis of current topics of research in materials science.
- Part I: Problem Solving - 8-9 tutorials Techniques for using physics and chemistry knowledge to solve general problems will be developed during tutorials in Hilary term.
- Part II: Project - 12 week full-time research project conducted in a research laboratory in materials science, physics, chemistry or nanoscience in the Schools of Physics, Chemistry, CRANN or other internationally leading academic or industrial research units.
- Part III: School Seminars - 6 Seminars in Hilary Term Students are obliged to attend a selected number of School of Chemistry and School of Physics seminars which are related to nanoscience, materials chemistry, materials physics or related areas. These seminars occur on Thursdays at 12 noon in the case of the School of Chemistry, or Fridays at 12 noon in the cae of the School of Physics.
- Part IV: Critical Analysis of current research in materials science - 2-3 tutorials
Assessment of the practical module
The 25 credits associated with this module is assessed by way of a 70:30 weighting between the assessment of the project work accounting for 70% of the 25 credits and the annual examination accounting for 30% of the 25 credits.
More details on the guidelines for the project and the assessment criteria and mark breakdown are available on a local webpage here.
The end of year examination comprises a three hour examination paper which assesses the critical analysis (12%) and problem solving components (18%). More details on the assessment information are available on a local webpage here, with a further specific page on past examples of this paper here.
