Medical Illustration Unit

The Medical Illustration Unit  in the Trinity Centre, St. James’s Hospital was established in 2005. The unit provides a comprehensive range of photographic, reprographic, print and video production services as well as offering support to those using new media technologies throughout the hospital and the School of Medicine.

The Clinical Photographer is available during normal office hours for all clinical requests. If it is known in advance that photography will be required please book services with the photographer, it is recognised that this will not always be possible and the unit will do its utmost to ensure all requests are dealt with as quickly as possible.

Requests for non-clinical photography will be entertained but it is advisable to book in advance and allow plenty of time.

Medical Illustration provide a full clinical video service, including recording operative procedures, patient interviews and examinations. 
We also provide a full  production service for training and educational videos, from initial storyboarding to delivery of DVDs.

The unit can provides a video editing service, including format conversion, tape duplication and digitisation of clips for inclusion in Microsoft PowerPoint presentations and DVD authoring.

Medical Illustration can design and print large format posters (up to A0).
All posters for scientific meetings, conferences, promotional use, etc., are produced by our Poster Service on semi-gloss paper, printed on a large-format, high resolution, ink jet printer. You can either prepare your poster yourself using a suitable graphics software program, such as PowerPoint, or use our Poster Design Service.

Please remember that demand for posters tends to follow a seasonal pattern, therefore, to avoid disappointment, you should submit your poster file to us as soon as possible. Please allow 5 working days (Monday-Friday), however, shorter notice may be possible.

The Medical Illustration Unit provides a graphic design service to assist with producing high quality illustrations, charts and graphs for publication or presentation as well as patient information leaflets/ booklets, brochures, newsletters and flyer design. Projects are managed from conception through to finished print. Staff meet with the design team to create the visual images required, using computers and specialist design software packages.

Whatever type of artwork or graphic design is needed, an appointment should be made with a member of the design team to discuss your particular needs and to agree deadlines.

The Unit offers full technical support for conferences, video conferencing  and podcasting. Audio/visual support services include: data/video projection, laptop computer, projection screen, overhead projector, wired and wireless microphones, audio mixer, and PA system rentals, live conference audio and multimedia technician support and video and/or or audio recording of lectures.

Paul Quinlan began work in the unit in late 2003 and looks after video and multimedia as well as doing design work.

Anthony Edwards joined in 2004 and is the senior clinical photographer as well as producing illustrations and graphics.
