Projects

  • Title
    • Effect of oestrogen replacement on BMD in females with aneroxia nervosa
  • Summary
    • Longitudinal 2 year study investigating the effect of oestrogen replacement therapy and supplemental calcium on bone mineral density, eating attitudes and mood state in females with clinically diagnosed eating disorders, comparison with controls. Significant increases in lumbar spine (L1-L4) and hip (neck of femur and total hip) BMD were recorded following the intervention phase. In addition significantly improved eating attitudes (by questionairre) and mood states were recorded. Hormonal data and bone turnover markers are presently being assayed.

  • Title
    • Investigation of commercially available caffeinated and carbohydrate beverages on exercise performance in male cyclists
  • Summary
    • To date this project has involved two seperate studies ;endurance and intermittent exercise. In the endurance exercise protocol commercially available carbohydrate and carbohydrate-caffeinated sports drinks consumed 60 min prior to exercise were compared to placebo. No significant effects on time to exhaustion, dehydration or rehydration, or assessed physiological variables were detected. In the intermittent exercise protocol, drinks were consumed 20 min before and every 10 min durind intermittent load (60 and 90% VO2 max) exercise to exhaustion. Compared to placebo signifificant increases (26 and 29%) in time to exhaustion were reported for both carbohydrate and carbohydrate-caffeinated beverages, respectively. The increases in exercise time to exhaustion equated to > 20 min, however, the lack of significant findings comparing carbohydrate and carbohydrate-caffeinated beverages poses questions concerning the presence of caffeine in commercially available sports drinks.

  • Title
    • Effects of carbohydrate and carbohydrate / protein beverages on recovery capacity following resistance training
  • Summary
    • Investigation of the short-term effects of isocalorically matched carbohydrate and carbohydrate / protein summplentation post-resistance training exercise on subsequent exercise capacity in 10 male academy rugby players. Randomly assigned beverages were consumed in a single-blinded crossover design study following a fixed 120 min resistance training session. Time to failure using a resistance exercise model was re-assessed after the 240 min supplementation phase to compare recovery capacities. Carbohydrate /protein supplementation increased total work capacity by 16% compared to a carbohydrate equivalent beverage suggesting a possible augmentation of glycogen restocking attributable to protein supplementation.
