Facing Your Fears Program – 27-29 April 2015
Group Therapy for Managing Anxiety in Children with High-Functioning ASD

Dr Judy Reaven PhD and Dr Audrey Blakely-Smith PhD

Facing Your Fears (FYF) is a family-focused group intervention for children and adolescents with high functioning autism and anxiety. The program uses cognitive behavioural principles to assist youth in identifying their anxiety and/or fears, as well as learning strategies to manage their anxiety symptoms.

FYF retains the core components of standard CBT programs, including graded exposure, deep breathing, emotion regulation strategies, and positive cognitive coping, but makes appropriate adaptations for youth with high-functioning ASD.

Part of the FYF program is a well developed parent education component and allows for the generalization of concepts and strategies learned in group to be implemented at home.

Managing anxiety symptoms effectively can help children and adolescents become more successful in academic setting and participate more fully in their daily lives.
This training is suitable for psychologists, child and adolescent psychiatrists, and other health  professionals working with children with ASD  and who are interested in using this program in their practice.

The  website is:  www.facingfears.org
