Davis Coakley Resaerch Fellowship

This MIRA sponsored award is made to a top clinician researcher in gerontology to support a two or three year research fellowship and PhD training in a topic of their choice. The award acknowledges the enormous contribution that Professor Davis Coakley made to the specialty of geriatric medicine in Ireland. He established the academic department of Medical Gerontology at Trinity College and was the first Chair of Medical Gerontology in Trinity College. He was Dean of Medicine and during his tenure established the diploma in Medical Gerontology for Nursing, the disciplinesof physiotherapy and occupational therapy and the Mercers Institute for Research on Ageing. Many of Ireland’s current consultants completed their research in Professor Coakleys' department.

A Festschrift was held on September 17th 2010 to pay tribute to the phenomenal contribution Professor Coakley has made to patients, staff and to the hospital over the period of his tenure at St. James's Hospital. There was a special emphasis on his outstanding commitment to the establishment and the evolution of the Mercers Institute for Research on Ageing and to the development of MISA at St. James's Hospital.
