Tissue Establishment

In keeping with European Union legislation a new cryo-preservation laboratory has been opened within the premises of the National Blood Centre on the Campus of St James's. This is staffed by the Haematology Department and is under the direction of Professor Shaun McCann. The Tissue Establishment oversees all aspects of stem cell transplantation. Clinical transplantation is carried out in St James's Hospital (over a 1,000 transplants have been done to date) under Dr Paul Browne, Dr Eibhlin Conneally, Elisabeth Vandenberghe and Dr Catherine Flynn. Chimaeric status following SCT continues to be an area of investigation.

New treatments for GvHD using human derived MSCs in conjunction with the EBMT consortium are currently under investigation.
