Description

The machining of biocompatible polymer materials has become increasingly important in a modern manufacturing environment. Machining operations offer an additional or alternative approach to the injection / extrusion / compression moulding techniques used to produce the dimensional accuracy required in many polymer components. Material properties of certain polymers make effective material removal and precision machining difficult, these properties include low elastic moduli and a high percentage of elongation before fracture.

The project goal is to discover new machining methods and to push the edge of technology in polymer machining in order to gain process knowledge unique to this application.
