Engineers Week at Trinity College Dublin

Feb 24, 2014

On the 12 February 2014, Trinity College Dublin, School of Engineering participated in Engineers week 2014. Engineers Week is an initiative of Engineers Ireland designed to promote public awareness of engineering and engineering activity in our society.

Primary schools from the wider Dublin area were invited to travel to Trinity College Dublin for an event in the Printing House Hall. Students from the primary schools were given the chance to get some hands-on engineering experience by building simple gadgets out of low-cost materials. A particular favourite was the doodle bots which were made out of markers and coffee cups. Students also got a demonstration of the research activity going on within the School, namely, a thermal imaging camera showed how temperature can be visualized on screen. Students were wowed by the various robots, designed and built at TCD by the students’ robotics group. The demonstrations were given by Trinity postgraduate researchers.

On the day the schools that enjoyed the event were St Joseph’s BNS, Terenure, 4th class (with their teacher Ms. Jan Molloy) and Our Lady of Victories BNS, 4th class (with their teacher, Mr Paddy Christie).

Dr Shaun McFadden, Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, organized the event and said “This event really inspired the students from both schools; hopefully some of these students will return as Trinity students of engineering or go on to follow engineering careers elsewhere”.
