Cárthach Ó Nuanáin, Composer, Ireland

Cárthach's piece for LookListen is called "Fresh Intelligence" and is a study in realtime composition with the ReacTable Tangible User Interface. This piece was performed live at the end of year show for the Masters in Music and Media Technologies here in Trinity.

Algorithmic composition is the use of algorithms, or a formal set of rules, to create music. Algorithms are an integral part of computer programming. Realising this, Lejaren Hiller made history in 1957 with the Illiac Suite, considered the first piece of music created with a computer. Today, the proliferation of high-speed computers allows algorithmic composition to be performed in real-time, right before your eyes (and ears).

The ReacTable is a collaborative electronic music instrument with a tabletop tangible multi-touch interface. This piece demonstrates the ReacTable as an interface for controlling a real-time composition system.
