Who we are and what we do

The Trinity Long Room Hub is TCD’s arts and humanities research institute. It was established in 2006, and in October 2007 received an award of almost €11 million from the Higher Education Authority under the PRTLI IV Programme.
The research institute takes its name from the iconic eighteenth-century Library in Trinity.

The Trinity Long Room Hub encompasses the Library and seven academic schools. These schools are the School of Drama, Film and Music, the School of English, the School of Histories and Humanities, the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultural Studies, the School of Linguistic, Speech and Communication Sciences, the School of Religions, Theology and Ecumenics, and the School of Social Sciences and Philosophy.

We seek to encourage and foster innovative interdisciplinary research across the entire spectrum of the arts and humanities at Trinity. We have a particular interest in stimulating research that will unlock the treasures of the College’s incomparable Library, and in encouraging the application of new technologies to arts and humanities research.

We operate a busy programme of events. Our regular Methods Seminar is designed to showcase both the opportunities and problems associated with the application of new technologies to arts and humanities research. The Hub Lectures consist of one-off presentations by prominent international scholars. Every six months we stage a large public event known as The Lewis Glucksman Memorial Symposium. This event commemorates a generous patron of the arts and humanities, and is designed to provide a forum for academics to reach out to the general public.

The Trinity Long Room Hub operates a competitive Research Initiative Funding (RIF) Scheme. The RIF Scheme allows eligible academic staff and post-docs to apply for up to €10,000 to support an individual or collaborative research project in the arts and humanities. In July 2008 twenty-three awards totalling almost €70,000 were made. In June 2009 we awarded almost €89,000 to sixteen separate projects.

The Trinity Long Room Hub is currently home to three post-doctoral Fellows.

We also administer the innovative, multidisciplinary PhD programme 'Texts, Contexts, Cultures' (TCC). The twelve students at TCD are working on topics which range in scope from the early fourteenth century to 2007. This programme is delivered in conjunction with our colleagues at NUI Galway and University College Cork. TCC allows students to tap into a range of knowledge and skills across the three universities: it represents the future of Ph.D. research in Ireland.
