Staging the Televisual Beckett

Samuel Beckett, who attended and taught at Trinity College Dublin, is considered one of the world’s greatest playwrights. During the later part of his life Beckett wrote a series of plays for television including Ghost Trio, Quad, Nacht und Traume, and …but the clouds…. These works are short formalistic masterpieces that engage complex philosophical questions in a uniquely Beckettian style. The plays meditate on the problems of identity and existence in the spaces of technology and are thus excellent tools for understanding our current digital culture. In consultation with the Beckett Estate and the Beckett Archive, Trinity College's Arts Technology Research Laboratory of the School of Drama, Film and Music under the direction of Dr. Matthew Causey will undertake a translation of Beckett’s televisual plays within technologized and mediated performance environments. Exploring performance practices which are hybrid, interactive and virtual, the productions will seek to understand our current digital condition through the lens of Beckett's televisual drama.
The Arts Technology Research Laboratory (ATRL) is an interdisciplinary, postgraduate research centre of the School of Drama, Film and Music at Trinity College Dublin designed to explore the emergent fields of creative arts practice and new technologies. The 650 square metre centre contains a multi-use high-tech performance and digital laboratory space with high-definition digital video systems, advanced surround sound technology, and state of the art audio and video workstations. The application of ATRL’s technologies will make Staging the Televisual Beckett possible.
