a shell has hit the road is a stream (where we wash) which previously ran under the road. We don’t know where it comes from or how many dead bodies it flows over, but the water is good enough for washing purposes and drinking (after it has been well boiled)
Ben and Bob and I went and had a look round the town, but as we only had been allowed 1 hour, and we had had a meal in that time we couldn’t see much of the place, but there were very few houses which had not been struck by shells. At dusk A Company left for the trenches for the 1st time, and we watched them march out of the courtyard with mingled feelings, pleasure at being in the thick of it and apprehension of what the future held in store.
