[3 April 1917] Ive just come back this evening from another OP cum “intelligence” trip and am in a bad humour for I failed to do any good and though I tried hard to find out things and kept the HQ busy I feel I might as well have been at the table where I write this for all the use Ive been, I am beginning to feel that these stunts we can well cope with our own and the enemy artillery & tell just what Each is up to but when it comes to infantry movements or where they are or why, the Lord is on one side.
I do not understand it and it is not unnatural Anyway my unstable reputation as a FOO with a gift for “situation” is gone & it is well. Though the Colonel has been very nice and has said in his Eyeglass voice. “Yes thank you very much I think that is probably the situation oh no everything you can send me helps and it is only by coordinating these scraps that we arrive at the probable state of affairs.” I am rather anxious that one of my signallers should get a kind of medal.
