some 1500 Turks retiring along the right bank parallel & within 500 yards of them, they hesitated as to the advisibility of firing and decided that as the Turks were so numerous & their cover so good little good would arrive in so doing. At this very moment, some 200 Turks & 12 officers appeared on the bank waving a white flag, a boat was put off and the officers & the mens rifles were put on board; the men were ordered to march back to Amara[h] as there was no room on the little tugboat; this they did & without escort! More, & still more were collected in the same way. On nearing Amara[h] on their return journey down stream, the Arabs were seen streaming in & out of the Turkish Residency looting, this was checked by a few rounds from the machine gun. To their left almost hidden in the mirage hundreds of the enemy were seen making their way towards the marshes.
