Postgraduates

The School of Languages, Literatures and Cultural Studies welcomes applications from suitably qualified students for graduate study. We host a thriving community of postgraduate students some of whom are undertaking taught programmes, leading to the degree of M.Phil, while others are studying for the research degrees of M.Litt. or Ph.D.

We currently offer seven Taught Postgraduate Programmes in Comparative Literature, Literary Translation, Medieval Language, Literature and Culture, Textual and Visual Studies, European Studies, Early Irish and a Postgraduate Diploma in Old Irish.
The Research Postgraduate Programmes are assessed by thesis alone. The thesis for the Ph.D. usually takes four years to complete. Students intending to proceed to the Ph.D. normally enter on the Probationary Ph.D. register. Progress is reviewed on an annual basis and, subject to satisfactory reports, a student’s status on the Ph.D. register will normally be confirmed at the end of the second year of registration.
The M.Litt. degree allows for research on topics which may require a shorter period of research and a shorter treatment. Students on the M.Litt. register have the option of applying for transfer to the Ph.D. register, as their work progresses, subject to satisfactory progress.

For further information on postgraduate study in the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultural Studies please contact the Director of Postgraduate Teaching and Learning, Dr Jürgen Uhlich.
