TCDconnect - How to connect Windows 10 or Windows 8 to the student Wi-Fi network

In order to successfully follow the steps below you must be in an area of Trinity with Wi-Fi coverage (see the Trinity Wi-Fi coverage information page). Once you have completed the first set of steps below you will be able to register your device for the TCDconnect service, connect to the Trinity Wi-Fi network and gain fast, secure internet access.

Important to Note: Before following the steps below, and in order to save yourself time when on campus, it is worth making sure all your Windows software updates have been installed.

Step 1: Configuring your device to connect to TCDwifi:

  1. Close all applications
  2. Hold down the Windows button on the keyboard (between the Ctrl and Alt keys) and press 'R' to bring up the 'Run' box
  3. Type in 'control panel' and hit OK
  4. Beside 'View by:', near the top-right of the window, choose Small icons
  5. Select the Network and Sharing Centre option
  6. From the Network and Sharing Centre screen choose Set up a new connection or network

  7. Choose Manually Connect to a Wireless Network
  8. For 'Network name' enter TCDwifi
  9. For 'Security type' select WPA2-Enterprise
  10. For 'Encryption type' choose AES
  11. Check the box for 'Connect even if the network is not broadcasting' and then click Next

  12. You should now be presented with the screen below reporting that you have Successfully added TCDwifi. Select the Change connection settings option.

  13. On the subsequent window select the Security tab and then choose Advanced Settings

    In Advanced settings click on the 802.1X settings tab, ensure that Specify authentication mode is ticked and that User or computer authentication is selected, then click OK.



  14. Returning to the TCDwifi Wireless Network Properties window, select the Security tab and the Settings button

    Uncheck the Validate server certificate box - make sure this is not selected, then click Configure...

  15. On the next Window untick the option Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any) - make sure this is not selected

  16. Click OK three times and then Close to exit the Wireless Network properties

  17. Left-click on the wireless icon in the system tray

  18. Click on TCDwifi and click Connect

Enter your Trinity username as college\username and enter your network login password. In some cases you may have to restart your computer first in order to be presented with the logon prompt.

Step 2: Scan and Register your device to connect to TCDwifi:

To complete the process and get internet access you must now register your computer for the TCDconnect service. This process includes downloading and running a security scan to ensure that the latest Windows security updates haven been installed and that you are running up-to-date anti-virus software.

Important to Note: Before following the steps below, and in order to save yourself time when on campus, it is worth making sure all your Windows software updates have been installed.

  1. Launch a web browser and browse to an external site* such as http://www.irishtimes.com and you'll be automatically redirected to the TCDconnect service terms and conditions page. Follow the web page instructions until you come to the main Registration web page and in the box towards the end of the page enter the short version of your Trinity username (e.g. jbloggs and not jbloggs@tcd.ie) and your network login password and hit Download to download the Dissolvable Agent file. Once the Dissolvable Agent file has been downloaded, run it to begin the scan.

    *Please note the address of the external site you chose to connect to must begin with http:// and not https:// - otherwise you will see something like a ‘site is private’ message when trying to connect.  If you are using the Edge web browser and have problems downloading and running the scan file then please try using another web browser such as Chrome, Internet Explorer or Firefox.

  2. When the scan completes a results page will be displayed.  If your device passes the scan then you will be connected within 90 seconds.  If your device fails the scan then click the listed item(s) on the results page and follow the displayed link(s) to see instructions on how to update your computer, before downloading and running the scan once more.

Important to know: If you do not use the TCDconnect service for 40 days you will need to re-register by repeating the steps above.
