Trinity-Owned Laptop Encryption Service - Password issues explained

After installing the McAfee Drive Encryption (MDE) software, you should be aware of some scenarios that may arise should you wish to change your Trinity network login password, if it expires or if your account becomes locked out.

Changing Your Trinity Network Login Password

Before you begin: please ensure you laptop is connected to the wired network, via a network cable.

When changing your password, it is important to note that you use two passwords in relation to this service:

  • Trinity Network Login password
  • McAfee Drive Encryption (MDE) password

When your laptop is encrypted these two passwords are synced together so that you only have to login once when you start up your laptop. This process is known as single sign-on (SSO).

However, once you change your Trinity network login password, your MDE password has to be changed so that SSO can be continued. When you change your network login password you must sync it with the MDE password. Follow the steps below to do this:

1. Right-click on the McAfee shield icon in the system tray at the bottom-right and choose 'McAfee Agent Status Monitor'.

2. Click each of the four buttons that are displayed in turn to sync your new network login password with the MDE password.

Forgotten Password

If you forget your MDE password, you will not be able to access your computer and the data files on this computer i.e. you will not be able to get past the pre-boot login screen. The only solution to this scenario is for you to arrange an appointment to call into the IT Service Desk so that an IT Services staff member can reset your MDE password and Trinity network login password.

This is one of the reasons why encryption is so secure as without the correct MDE password you cannot access the computer and its data files, so it is imperative that you remember this password. IT Services staff do not have a facility to change this MDE password remotely for your laptop, thus if you are off campus or travelling overseas and have forgotten your password, there is no way of accessing your computer until you arrange an appointment to call to the IT Service Desk in person on campus.

Network Login Password Expiry

Before you begin: please ensure you laptop is connected to the wired network, via a network cable.

After the MDE software has been installed if your network login password expires you can change your password as normal. After you change your network login password you must sync it with the MDE password. To do this:

1. Right-click on the McAfee shield icon in the system tray at the bottom-right and choose 'McAfee Agent Status Monitor'.

Account Lockout

If your Trinity computer account is locked out, you will be able to login with MDE when you start up your laptop but you will not be able to login to Windows. Therefore you will have to go through the normal account lockout procedure before being able to access your data once more.
