IT Services Alerts - Update: What happened to the Internet access and web services earlier today, June 7th

Update on Loss of Internet and Network Services, Thursday 7th June 9.00 - 13.30 Hours

Trinity lost access to the Internet and related network services, including the Trinity website and email, today from 9am until services were restored at 1:30pm.

IT Services implemented a new Next Generation Firewall and Intrusion Protection System in January 2018 and this manages the security boundary between the University data network and the general internet.  Unfortunately this morning during a routine, planned firewall software update where no downtime was expected, we experienced a catastrophic service failure.  The firewall service is provided by a pair of devices, one of which is designed to be active while the other is in standby, providing service resilience. However the issue encountered this morning propagated to the standby firewall and this led to the loss of service.

We have temporarily reinstated the previous generation of firewall equipment to provide the University with an Internet Service while we work with our support partners and the manufacturer’s engineers to fully restore our service on our Next Generation Firewall.

Internet and web services should now be returned to normal for most but if any particular internet service, that is usually available to you from the Trinity Network, is not working please contact the IT Service Desk.

Replacement infrastructure has been successfully brought into service and Internet and web services should now be returning to normal for most of the Trinity community. We thank all of those affected today for their patience and support.
