IT Services Alerts - 10Gb Network Upgrade: Scheduled interruption to data network services, June 25th, 8am-12noon

This upgrade represents a significant evolution of the College central network infrastructure and will introduce a high performance, high bandwidth, fully resilient 10 Gigabits per second network core architecture. This architecture is designed to support and future-proof the connectivity requirements of the College community and underpin the College’s core mission of Teaching and Research over the coming years in line with action item 6.15 of the College Strategic plan 2009-2014.

Final testing of this new system is currently in progress and, as above, the date of Saturday June 25th has been set as the changeover date to migrate the central College network core infrastructure from the existing platform to the new 10Gbps platform.  During the downtime period all central IT services and data network connectivity will be unavailable, the following is a summary of the expected impact on IT services during this period:

LAN - No access to email, filestorage or any network/server based applications, databases etc. No access to the wired or wireless data network for Staff, Students or Guests. All offices, lecture theatres, libraries, seminar rooms, residences, foyers/public areas etc. in all locations both on-campus and in TCD remote sites will be affected.

WAN – No outbound internet connectivity available from any College or remote site wired or wireless network or location. Inbound internet connectivity to TCD and TCD internet services available externally will be unavailable, such as the college web server www.tcd.ie, mymail.tcd.ie, go.tcd.ie, remote access VPN service etc.

Voice – IP Telephony enabled locations will have no voice connectivity either locally or external.

AMNs (Autonomously Managed Networks) – No central IT services will be available as outlined above. No internet connectivity or data network connectivity across the IS Services/AMN interface.

Following the downtime it is expected that from 12 noon Saturday June 25th all affected IT services should resume business as usual.

Beginning in Q1 2011, a project was initiated in IS Services to upgrade the College network core infrastructure to a next-generation, clustered, 10 Gigabits per second platform.

In order to carry out this upgrade work a four-hour period of downtime during which College will have NO data network connectivity is scheduled from 8am to 12 noon on Saturday June 25th. The following four hour period from 12 noon to 4pm should be considered an "at risk" period during which we will specifically monitor the network for any unlikely instability and take corrective action if necessary.
